Abstract
"Central line's associated blood stream infections (CLABSIs) are serious but preventable infections. CLABSI's are a major cause of inpatient clinical decline. According to the CDC (2011) each CLABSI carries excess health-care costs of $16,550 and mortality of up to 25 percent, this does not take into consideration the cost penalties our hospital is assessed by CMS as well as performance based incentives. With the addition of the permanent inpatient population to our 6E/Observation unit this FY2017, our staff are caring for higher acuity patients and must practice prevention strategies as a major key to infection control. Last FY2016 we had no hospital acquired central line infections; our goal is to remain free from hospital acquired central line infections from July 1,2016-January 31, 2017. When taking into consideration that each line day is a potential opportunity for our patient to acquire a CLABSI we anticipate a savings of millions of dollars to our hospital through an ounce of infection prevention."--Aim statement.
