Abstract
"Object and Scope of the Study: It is ths purpose of this study to attempt to determine the potential of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) as a market for United States grains. This study will, therefore, be limited to one market, EFTA, and one group of commodities, namely the grains. This group will encompass both wheat and coarse or feed grains. The subgroup, feed grains, includes corn, barley, oats, rye and sorghum. In order to determine the potential market, the production, consumption and trade statistics for each of the commodities considered will be explored, and trend lines and projections developed from their analysis, These projections give an indication of the importance of EFTA as a market for United States grains in the near future. Because of the limited scope of this thesis, the production, consumption and trade figures will be handled in terms of physical quantities only. No attempt will be made to explore or project the dollar value of the transactions. The projections, therefore, are baaed on the assumption that the existing price elasticities and cross elasticities of demand will remain unchanged through the period under consideration."--Page 2.
