Database Concepts
Abstract
This presentations highlights the advantages of using a database management systems approach to GIS. Database usage will lead to a reduction in data redundancy, as shared rather than independent databases will reduce the problem of inconsistencies in stored information. Maintenance of data integrity and quality is much easier. Data are self-documented or self-descriptive. Databases are able to avoid inconsistencies, as data must follow prescribed models, rules, and standards. Finally, they offer reduced costs and increased security over the alternatives. The presentation also looks at components and types of database systems.
