This study of the German realist novel "Effi Briest" by Theodor Fontane, is an elaboration on the principles put forth in the book "Die Rolle des Erzählers in der Epik", or The Role of the Narrator in the Epic, by Dr. Friedemann. The goal of this work is: first, a breakdown of the composition of the novel "Effi Briest" with special emphasis on its realistic elements; second, a study of the art of the epic poet as it's revealed in this novel; and third, on the basis of this analysis, a new appreciation of the novel with regard to these techniques.eng
