Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences (MU)
Pathology and the anatomical sciences form a bridge between the basic sciences and clinical medicine. Anatomical sciences encompasses the understanding of the structure and function of the body; pathology is a discipline that deals with all aspects of human disease. In the School of Medicine at the University of Missouri, Pathology and Anatomical Sciences is a single department. Faculty in the department teach and conduct research in the anatomy, cell biology, pathology and laboratory medicine.

Characterization of novel bat influenza viruses and mammalian orthoreoviruses
(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2023)[EMBARGOED UNTIL 5/1/2024] Emerging and reemerging RNA viruses including both segmented and nonsegmented viruses cause significant threats to public and animal health. Segmented RNA viruses such as influenza virus and ... -
Patient adherence to orthopaedic treatment plans : toward patient-centered definitions, measurement, and management
(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2023)[EMBARGOED UNTIL 5/1/2024] Patient adherence to prescribed management protocols is associated with improved function, higher patient satisfaction, and lower complication rates following orthopaedic treatments. While adherence ... -
Environmental variability affects gut microbiota and experimental outcomes in mouse models
(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2023)The gut microbiome of humans and animals is critical to host health. Mice are used to investigate the microbiome and its influences; however, the predictive value of such studies is hindered by cage effects due to coprophagy. ... -
Biomechanical and immunological contributions to osteochondral allograft transplantation outcomes
(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2023)Osteochondral allograft (OCA) transplantation offers a reliable option for treating complex articular injuries in multiple joints, but treatment failure rates remain a concern. Lack of functional integration of OCAs is a ... -
The role of RECK in the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis
(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2022)[EMBARGOED UNTIL 12/1/2023] Reversion-inducing cysteine-rich protein with Kazal motifs, or RECK, is a cell surface-anchored glycoprotein and a critical regulator of the extracellular matrix (ECM). It has been examined ... -
Pathobiological analysis of developmental dysplasia of the hip and its progression to osteoarthritis
(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2022)Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is recognized as one of the leading causes of early-onset hip osteoarthritis and a primary reason for undergoing total hip arthroplasty prior to 50 years of age. Even with an increase ... -
Emerging and infectious diseases: defending against a dynamic opponent
(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2022)Emerging infectious diseases (EID) pose a growing threat to public health each year. Viruses and bacteria alike are major causes of EIDs and as these pathogens mutate, reemergence occurs, leading to the need for advanced ... -
The respiratory microbiota of dogs and cats in health and disease: expanding our breadth of knowledge
(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2022)[EMBARGOED UNTIL 5/31/2023] The long-held belief that the lungs were devoid of bacteria was largely perpetuated by the fact that most bacteria on earth are not cultivable using standard culture methods. Using culture-independent ... -
Interference with biologic transmission of Anaplasma marginale by targeting the tick-pathogen interface
(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2022)[EMBARGOED UNTIL 5/31/2023] Ticks are globally renowned vectors for numerous zoonoses. Ixodid ticks transmit a variety of viral, bacterial, and protozoan pathogens to their vertebrate hosts. Because of the expansion of the ... -
Function and evolution of the crocodyliform feeding apparatus
(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2021)The evolution of crocodylians from their suchian ancestors represents one of the great transformations in vertebrate evolution. Modern crocodylians have flat skulls and generate high forces during feeding, but crocodylian ... -
Investigating age- and virulence factor- dependent innate immune activation during neonatal meningitis associated E. coli infection
(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2021)Neonatal meningitis-associated Escherichia coli (NMEC) is a leading cause of early-onset sepsis and meningitis. While current antibiotic protocols have significantly reduced mortality associated with neonatal sepsis and ... -
Interactions of parvoviruses with the cellular DNA damage response and CTCF
(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2021)Nuclear DNA viruses must be able to simultaneously access cellular factors that aid their life cycle while evading inhibitory factors in order to sustain their expression and replication. Establishment of nuclear sites ... -
Development of translational models for intervertebral disc degeneration using a comparative approach for canine and human patients
(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2020)Intervertebral discs (IVDs) are unique musculoskeletal tissues within functional spinal unit organs comprising the spinal column that distribute loads and allow complex movements for vertebrates. IVD degeneration has been ... -
Characterization of the rat Atg16l1 gene and its role in autophagy and disease
(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2020)Crohn's disease (CD) is a potentially life-threatening inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract affecting approximately 1.6 million Americans. Previous studies confirm the important role of genetics in IBD. ... -
Evaluation of micro-dystrophin based and dystrophin-independent AAV gene therapies for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2020)[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI-COLUMBIA AT REQUEST OF AUTHOR.] Duchenne Muscular dystrophy (DMD) is the most common, progressive childhood muscular dystrophy with an X-linked inheritance. The major cause ... -
The influence of host genetics, virome, and gut microbiota transfer methods in mouse model reproducibility
(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2021)Gut microbiome (GM), the complex community that combines all bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and fungi located in the gut of human or animal, plays a significant role in host health and disease. Animal model are widely used ... -
Foot and ankle functional morphology in anthropoid primates and Miocene hominoids
(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2020)Locomotion is essential for survival in many taxa. It also varies greatly among organisms, including primates. Studying locomotor diversity in extant and fossil primates requires an understanding of form-function relationships. ... -
Improving ligament tissue scaffold with the use of genipin and gold nanoparticles
(University of Missouri--Columbia, 2020)Decellularized tissue is used for a wide array of tissue injuries with tendon and ligament repair being among the most common. However, despite their frequent use there is concern over the lengthy inflammatory period and ... -
